SHOPPING in TURKEY

In Turkey, suede and leather are particularly important, along with all kinds of clothes and other goods such as handbags, belts, shoes, etc., at prices which surprise and please the visitor.
In the large stores in main cities, dresses, trousers, and coats, made of extremely fine leather and suede, can be found. If you are looking for something a little more unusual, there is the "nargile" (hubble-bubble pipe); or buy a backgammon set and learn the national Turkish game. Your only difficulty shopping in Turkey will be deciding what to choose from the many hundreds of tempting bargains.

    Shopping:
Turkey is a treasure-house of hand-made products. These include carpet and kilims, ceramics, leather, jewellery, embroidery, onyx, etc.
When purchasing carpets, jewelery or leather products, it is advisable to consult your guide or do your shopping at a well-known store rather than in the street.
70% of the tourists coming to Turkey buy carpets because Turkish carpets are popular. To understand how valuable Turkish carpets are, it is better to go back to their origin. Nomads created carpets first by weawing their tents and it is improved when needed something on the floor. The history of carpets goes back to 6th century AD but only Seljuk period pieces survived. Marco Polo reported in 1 BC that the best and finest carpets are woven in Konya through the centuries Anatolien women expressed their feelings on the carpets. Even so, as the cultural features change the patterns vary from regions to regions. Turkish carpets are made of silk, wool or cotton. Taking a tour of a carpet center is highly recommended in order to have firsthand experience of this art and to see the process from the very beginning till the end.

Leather processing is a traditional handicraft in Turkey and was developed during the Ottoman period. When purchasing leather goods, one should be aware that should be dyed in tanks instead of spraying method. The best type is silk leather which is the thinnest leather in the world for four seasons. Visiting a manufacturing centre would be a good idea.
